It’s interesting that today i came across a little twitter discussion between two of my peers that actually has quite an interesting perspective.
When looking for a job or posting a job it feel that certain jargon’s are so entrenched into the job hunting world that it can sound pretty much fake and unauthentic.
How many times do you come across an agency looking for ‘enthusiastic’ people? Being a good ‘team player’?
While Susan Hallam was advertising an SEO post in her agency and looking for an ‘enthusiastic’ new staff member, Pete Simcoe cheekily asked her if her ‘enthusiastic’ post meant ‘cheap’ labour.
Let’s make clear from the start, I doubt any post at Susan Hallam agency would offer less than a fair deal to their staff members and pretty good fun being part of her team. Anyone that met her can see that she has very strong ethic behaviour and I would be very surprised if anyone proved otherwise.
However, the use of the word ‘enthusiastic’ in these job posts, somehow, really conveys a message of: You need to have lots of energy and work for a very low salary. Not exactly the most unique selling proposition for anyone looking for a job.
I suppose it’s hard to change or walk away from these jargon’s in this job hunting filed, since they are probably the base of reference for many people.
I must say though that it would be really nice to see some interesting job posts with a more varied vocabulary and showing a bit more of the company personality and less of the ‘general’ universal corporate world where every company looks the same.
After all, the way you post a job offer should also convey what your business is all about.
